Paul writes in Ephesians 4:11-12, “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” Again, it is hard to build up the body of Christ if we are alone at home. If you read the entire New Testament, there is not one single lone-ranger Christian. You will always see the apostles mentioning the church in general.
Paul mentions the gifts of the Spirit in I Corinthians chapter 12 and includes a spirit of wisdom, knowledge, service and so on. The point is that these gifts are intended for the many different members of the church and if no one attends church they cannot use their gifts or the gifts of other Christian’s minister to them.
John 10:11-18 mentions the Parable of the Good Shepherd. This clearly refers to Jesus Christ who said that He willingly lays down His life for His sheep (v 17). He did this at Calvary. The shepherds in Jesus’ time would lie down at the gate and kept the sheep inside the pen, for outside the sheep pen there were ravenous wolves that could kill them. There is protection only inside the sheepfold. Sheep are not very smart. They are completely helpless by themselves. In fact, if one falls on its back, it cannot get back and will starve to death while unable to right itself. Plus the fact if it is on its back, it is easy game for anything. Sheep have been known to walk right off a cliff. Sheep are virtually defenseless. Sheep cannot defend themselves. They are not very fast. But if there is a faithful shepherd, the sheep know his name. They recognize the voice and will stay near the shepherd. Jesus Christ is the Head of the church but He has appointed under shepherds to shepherd local flocks. They are still subject to the Good Shepherd to which the sheep truly belong. But a sheep outside of the sheepfold is completely helpless and vulnerable. So too is the renegade Christian who forgoes church attendance.

Join School Of Christian Development

School Of Christian Development is purposely meant for teaching and learning. 1 Timothy 3:15 – The church is pillar and ground of the truth. 1 Corinthians 14:19,26,31,40 – The church conducts assemblies to teach and edify the members.

Ephesians 4:15, 16 – Each member must work to build up the body. This is true of all members and all church meetings. If all the members were as active as you are, how effectively would the church be built up?

Hebrews 10:23-25 – In order to hold fast our hope and not fall away, we must exhort and provoke one another to love and good works (cf. 3:12,13). To fulfill this duty, we should attend regularly when the church meets.

Hebrews 13:17 – Elders watch on behalf of members’ souls, guiding the flock so members are fed (Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 5:1-3). Much of this instruction is done in meetings. Members are responsible to obey and submit to the elders. We must cooperate with their teaching efforts, which require being present when the teaching is done.

Attend Church Service

Worship is about honoring and praising our Lord and Savior. It is a time when we gather together to experience the presence of the Holy Spirit, and express our joy and gratitude. The power of God’s word touches those who are hurting and awakens hope for the hopeless. Whether you prefer traditional or contemporary worship, we invite you to celebrate the good news in Jesus Christ!

You will find a warm and friendly welcome at First United Methodist Church Elgin. We invite you to join us in a celebration of worship, christian fellowship, study and service. When you become a part of our exciting journey of faith, you will be encouraged, challenged and rewarded with renewed spirituality.
